But the exact dimensions, edge profile, length availability, and underside construction vary by product.

For accurate material planning:

  1. identify the exact decking product
  2. use the published actual width and thickness
  3. determine the required side gap
  4. calculate board courses from installed board pitch
  5. plan picture frames and breaker boards separately
  6. add an appropriate waste allowance
  7. verify grooved and square-edge length availability

The Backyard Standard verdict: Use physical square footage to compare board pricing, but use actual board width + installed gap to plan board courses. Those are two different calculations, and keeping them separate produces a much more accurate material estimate.
