How to Calculate How Much Deck Railing You Need
Start by measuring only the deck edges that will actually receive railing.
Do not automatically use the entire deck perimeter.
An attached rectangular deck often has no railing along the house side.
For example, a 16×12 deck with railing across the 16-foot outside edge and both 12-foot sides begins with:
16 + 12 + 12 = 40 linear feet of level railing
Then subtract gate or opening widths and add stair railing separately.
Stair railing should not simply be added as stair width. Estimate the sloped railing length and account for whether railing is installed on one side or both sides.
Why the Calculator Uses Individual Railing Runs
Total railing footage alone is not enough to estimate rail kits accurately.
Twenty-four feet of continuous railing behaves differently from four separate six-foot runs.
Every continuous run creates its own end conditions, post locations, and section cuts.
That is why the calculator counts sections run by run instead of simply dividing total railing footage by six or eight feet.

Do not use a selected 6-foot or 8-foot rail-section length as proof that railing posts are structurally permitted at that spacing.
Deck Railing Post Spacing Is a Structural Issue
Guard posts do more than hold rail sections in place.
Loads applied to the guard must transfer through the posts and their connections into the deck framing.
The American Wood Council’s DCA 6 prescriptive wood guard detail, for example, uses specific guard-post spacing and connection details for that particular prescriptive assembly.
That should not be interpreted as a universal spacing rule for every aluminum, composite, cable, glass, or proprietary railing system.

Why This Calculator Does Not Use One Price for Every Foot of Railing
A 40-foot straight level railing project and a 40-foot project containing two stair runs, gates, demolition, multiple corners, and structural repair are not economically equivalent.
Yet many basic cost calculators treat them exactly the same:
Total railing footage × one generic price per foot
The BYS model instead separates the project into the components that actually create cost.
That means a railing project’s price can increase even when the total linear footage does not.
