Decking Material vs Total Deck Cost

The cost of the deck boards is not the cost of the deck.

Trex currently publishes composite-deck material planning figures that vary by product and cost resource, with current guidance generally landing in the roughly $10–$30 per square foot range. Those figures can include the substructure, decking, hardware, and fasteners—not just the deck boards.

Trex also notes that materials can represent only about one-third of the cost of many professionally installed projects.

That distinction matters: a manufacturer material-package estimate should not be used as the price of the decking surface itself.

New Deck

A new deck requires a new substructure plus the walking surface and any selected features.

Full Replacement

Full replacement adds removal and disposal of the existing deck before the new project is built.

Current national consumer cost data commonly places deck demolition around $5–$15 per square foot, although difficult removal, access, disposal rules, concrete, or unusually heavy structures can change the cost.

Resurfacing

Resurfacing retains the existing structural frame and replaces some or all of the walking surface.

Do not choose resurfacing simply because the joists still exist. The frame needs to be structurally suitable, properly spaced for the new decking, and capable of continued service.

Why the Calculator Does Not Guess Existing-Frame Repair Cost

Concealed framing is one of the biggest uncertainties in a resurfacing project.

Until decking is removed, you may discover:

Why is my all-in cost per square foot so high?

The displayed number divides the complete selected project by deck floor area. Railing, stairs, demolition, premium materials and other features can therefore make the all-in project cost per deck square foot much higher than a headline base-deck average.

Should I use the midpoint as my budget?

Treat the midpoint as a planning reference, not a target contractor price. The low-to-high range is more useful until the project is fully designed and locally priced.
